Bodycam Shows Tense Standoff as Suspect Fires at Deputy with Taser Drawn
A Berrien County Sheriff’s deputy fatally shot a suspect who opened fire during a confrontation on June 30, 2025, authorities said.
Deputy Cal Landon approached 48-year-old Joshua Coffey of South Bend, whose vehicle was parked on private property. When asked for identification, Coffey fled into a nearby park, prompting a chase.
Bodycam footage shows Coffey appearing to surrender before suddenly drawing a firearm and firing two shots at Landon.
The deputy, initially wielding a taser, switched to his service weapon and returned fire, killing Coffey.
Deputy Sabrina LaRatta arrived to find Coffey deceased, his finger still on the trigger.
An unidentified woman present at the encounter’s start has been located, but details remain undisclosed.
Landon is on administrative leave pending investigation, per standard protocol
