Law Enforcement Recovers Skimming Devices, Educates Businesses to Protect Vulnerable Communities
In a coordinated effort the U.S. Secret Service, alongside the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Memphis-area law enforcement, and agencies from Tennessee and Mississippi, conducted a major operation to combat Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) fraud and card skimming in metropolitan Memphis.
Visiting over 486 businesses, authorities inspected 2,200 point-of-sale terminals, 857 gas pumps, and 234 ATMs, recovering four illegal skimming devices and preventing an estimated $4.2 million in losses.
The operation also distributed educational materials to help businesses identify skimming devices, which criminals use to steal EBT and payment card data, costing over $1 billion annually.
EBT fraud disproportionately harms vulnerable families, with stolen funds often supporting organized crime or terrorism.
Authorities urge consumers to inspect card readers, use chip or tap-to-pay options, and avoid PIN entry at gas pumps to stay protected.
