USDA Claims State’s Cage-Free Laws Violate Federal Authority, Harm Consumers

The Trump Administration has filed a lawsuit against California, challenging state laws that have driven egg prices to record highs.

The Department of Justice targets Governor Gavin Newsom, Attorney General Rob Bonta, and other officials, alleging California’s Proposition 12 imposes excessive regulations on egg production nationwide, violating the U.S. Constitution’s Supremacy Clause.

U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke L. Rollins condemned the state’s “rogue” cage-free egg mandates, arguing they eliminate consumer choice and inflate costs.“California’s actions harm not just its residents but Americans across the country,” Rollins stated.

The lawsuit follows Rollins’ five-point plan, announced in February, to combat avian flu and reduce egg prices, which have since dropped 63%.

The USDA asserts that California’s regulations undermine federal authority under the Egg Products Inspection Act, restricting interstate commerce and burdening producers.
