Senator Rand Paul’s Year-Long Investigation Reveals Systemic Negligence and Lack of Accountability
One year after the near-assassination of former President Donald Trump at a Butler, Pennsylvania rally, Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) released a scathing final report on July 13, 2025, detailing critical failures by the U.S. Secret Service (USSS).
The bipartisan investigation, conducted with the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, found that 20-year-old Thomas Crooks fired eight shots on July 13, 2024, killing Corey Comperatore and injuring three, including President Trump, due to preventable lapses.
The report highlights denied resource requests, communication breakdowns, and an inexperienced operator managing counter-drone systems, despite 25 minutes’ prior warning.
No firings occurred, with only six agents disciplined, some with reduced penalties, prompting Paul to demand stronger accountability. Citing a “cascade of failures,” the report calls for transparency and reform, releasing subpoenaed records.
Issued amid ongoing threats to President Trump, it underscores a systemic need to overhaul USSS protocols to prevent future tragedies.
