703 Million Barrels of Oil, 5.8 Trillion Cubic Feet of Gas Identified in Wyoming and Colorado
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has released a new assessment revealing significant undiscovered oil and gas resources in the Niobrara Formation, spanning southwest Wyoming and northwest Colorado.
The report estimates 703 million barrels of technically recoverable oil, enough to meet U.S. demand for one month, and 5.8 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, equivalent to two months of national consumption.

This assessment, part of ongoing USGS efforts to evaluate energy potential, follows a recent study of the Mowry Composite Total Petroleum System in the same region.
“Our findings highlight substantial untapped resources,” said USGS Acting Director Sarah Ryker.
The data informs policymakers, land managers, and industry, aiding in resource planning and exploration.
Advances in horizontal drilling and fracking have expanded the scope of such assessments, revolutionizing domestic energy production.
