Partnership aims to streamline federal bureaucracy, but raises questions about Education Department’s future
The U.S. Departments of Labor and Education launched a workforce development partnership, transferring key education programs to Labor’s control to streamline federal bureaucracy.
Under Executive Order No. 14278, signed April 23, 2025, Labor will administer adult education, family literacy, and career-technical programs previously managed by Education, alongside Education staff.
This shift, announced today, aims to reduce duplication, cut compliance costs, and redirect funds to workforce training.
Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer and Education Secretary Linda McMahon hailed the move as a response to an “inefficient” system, promising clearer state guidance and a stronger talent pipeline
Critics, however, see it as a step toward dismantling the Education Department, aligning with President Trump’s push to return education to states.
The partnership’s implementation, paused briefly by a federal judge, signals a bold restructuring with potential long-term impacts on federal education policy.
