Interior Secretary and Attorney General Tour Island to Advance Law-and-Order Plan
Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum and Attorney General Pam Bondi visited Alcatraz Island to evaluate its potential reopening as a federal prison for “dangerous criminals and illegal immigrants,” per President Donald Trump’s May directive.
The former prison, a National Park Service site once housing Al Capone and George “Machine Gun” Kelly, was toured by the officials, who inspected the dock, power station, and cell blocks alongside Bureau of Prisons representatives.
The visit aligns with President Trump’s mission to restore law and order, addressing California’s rising violent and property crime rates.
The trip follows the signing of Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill, a landmark border security investment.
Asserting a new era of American resolve, Burgum and Bondi unveiled a bold strategy to defend our communities.
This initiative will see the nation’s most dangerous offenders secured on the iconic island, sending an unmistakable message that the safety of the American people is non-negotiable.
