RFK Jr. and Rubio Lead Trump Administration’s Defiance of Global Health Rules
On July 18, 2025, U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the formal rejection of the 2024 World Health Organization (WHO) International Health Regulations (IHR) amendments, a move to safeguard American sovereignty.
The amendments, adopted by the WHO’s World Health Assembly on June 1, 2024, would grant the WHO authority to impose global lockdowns, travel restrictions, and digital health documents, potentially overriding national policies.
Kennedy warned of “narrative management” and censorship risks, while Rubio criticized the amendments’ vague terms, which could prioritize political “solidarity” over effective action.
Congressional leaders, including Senators Ron Johnson and Representatives Chip Roy and Tom Tiffany, praised the decision, citing the WHO’s mishandling of COVID-19.
In a firm defense of American self-governance, the administration rejected the agreement ahead of the July 19 binding deadline, prioritizing the fundamental rights of its citizens over any international decree.
