South Africa’s Ruling Party Clings to Dictatorial Control Over National Symbol Amid Political Feud
The African National Congress (ANC) unleashed a scathing attack on former President Jacob Zuma on July 19, 2025, condemning his use of the South African flag during a Morocco visit on July 15, where he endorsed Morocco’s Western Sahara autonomy plan.
Issued from its 113th anniversary podium, the ANC accused Zuma, now MK Party leader, of undermining sovereignty, echoing its absurd support for the treason charges, filed by Zuma’s uMkhonto WeSizwe Party, against AfriForum and condemning Afrikaner delegates over their visit to Washington.
The Rabat meeting with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita saw Zuma align with a plan the ANC opposes, prompting its latest salvo in a pattern of dictatorial flag monopolization.
This follows baseless attacks on DA MP Emma Powell for clarifying U.S. aid threats.

The ANC’s insistence that only its government can wield the flag, denying citizens like Zuma or AfriForum from visiting and engaging with world leaders, borders on farce, exposing a desperate grip on power as its influence wanes amid internal rifts and public skepticism.
