Grants Aim to Counter China, Boost Maritime Strength

The Trump administration, through Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy, announced $8.75 million in grants on July 21, 2025, to bolster 17 small shipyards across 12 states.

The Maritime Administration’s Small Shipyard Grant Program funds will modernize infrastructure, enhance training, and expand apprenticeships, aiming to strengthen U.S. shipbuilding against Chinese dominance.

“President Trump’s plan to reclaim maritime dominance starts with rebuilding America’s shipyards,” Duffy said, emphasizing economic and national security benefits.

Since 2008, the program has awarded $320.5 million across 382 grants.

Acting Maritime Administrator Sang Yi highlighted the grants’ role in spurring innovation and job creation.

These investments are a critical step toward restoring U.S. maritime power and ensuring freedom on global seas, the Trump administration concludes.
