DOJ Investigation Uncovers Systemic Oversight Failures at Bureau of Prisons Facility
A whistleblower’s disclosure at the Federal Correctional Institution Three Rivers in Live Oak County, Texas, revealed that Bureau of Prisons (BOP) officials failed to collect nearly $2.5 million in court-ordered inmate payments owed to crime victims and courts, the U.S. Office of Special Counsel (OSC) reported.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) investigation, prompted by the whistleblower, also found $70,000 in uncollectable debts due to expired time limits.
The BOP has since implemented repayment plans, monthly staff reminders, and additional training to address the systemic oversight failures.
OSC Senior Counsel Charles Baldis praised the whistleblower’s courage, urging the DOJ to enhance accountability and consider a monetary reward for the whistleblower.
This case exposes critical lapses in prison financial management, delaying justice for victims and highlighting the need for robust federal oversight.
