New PHMSA Strategy Targets High-Risk Areas Amid Fossil Fuel Policy Debate
The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) unveiled its first-ever data-driven pipeline inspection and enforcement priorities, aiming to enhance safety across 3.4 million miles of U.S. pipelines.
Announced by Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy, the initiative targets incidents, high-consequence areas, control room management, damage prevention, and due diligence, as outlined in a PHMSA memorandum.
Duffy emphasized that regulations should ensure safety, not hinder fossil fuel industries, sparking debate over environmental priorities.
Acting Administrator Ben Kochman pledged rigorous enforcement, focusing on recent safety rules like rupture mitigation valves and pipeline material verification.
The shift responds to past accidents and aims to protect communities while refining PHMSA’s mission.
