Federal investigation targets Oregon Department of Education for allegedly allowing males to compete in female sports, sparking debate over fairness and rights.
The U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) launched an investigation into the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) on July 25, 2025, following a complaint from the America First Policy Institute (AFPI).
The probe centers on allegations that ODE’s policies permitting transgender athletes to compete in female sports violate Title IX, which prohibits gender discrimination in federally funded education programs.
Acting Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Craig Trainor emphasized that such policies undermine women’s rights, safety, and opportunities.
AFPI’s Jessica Hart Steinmann hailed the investigation as a step toward restoring Title IX’s original intent.
The inquiry, sparked by a complaint about a transgender runner winning girls’ races in Portland, could lead to enforcement actions, including federal funding cuts.
This high-stakes clash highlights tensions between transgender inclusion and protections for female athletes, with national implications for school sports policies.
