Rubio’s Statement Signals Tough Stance on Venezuela’s Illegitimate Rule

One year after Nicolás Maduro’s fraudulent claim of victory in Venezuela’s July 28, 2024, presidential election, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio condemned the dictator’s regime as an illegitimate narco-terrorist operation.

In a July 27, 2025, statement, Rubio accused Maduro, leader of the Cartel de Los Soles, of corrupting Venezuela’s institutions to traffic drugs into the U.S. and Europe, citing a 2020 U.S. indictment.

He highlighted Maduro’s manipulation of elections, including upcoming municipal votes timed to suppress dissent through military and police force.

Rubio’s remarks underscore U.S. commitment to restoring Venezuelan democracy and holding Maduro accountable, signaling potential escalation of sanctions or diplomatic pressure.

The statement reflects growing U.S. concern over Maduro’s threat to regional stability and American national security, as his regime’s actions continue to drive migration and embolden authoritarian allies.
