High job openings in rural states signal economic shifts, while veterans see stronger employment prospects in 2024.
In 2024, Alaska and West Virginia topped the nation with job openings rates of 6.3% and 6.2%, respectively, far exceeding the national average of 4.7%, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data.
Kentucky, New Mexico, and South Carolina followed closely at 5.8%, while coastal states like California (3.6%) and Washington lagged.
Alaska’s rate, consistently high since 2020, reflects a robust demand for labor in industries like energy and tourism.

Meanwhile, the veteran unemployment rate dropped to 3.0% in 2024, outpacing nonveterans at 3.9%, with women veterans at 3.5%.

This marks a significant improvement for the 17.6 million veterans, 12% of whom are women.
The data highlights regional economic disparities and a tightening labor market for veterans, signaling opportunities for workers but challenges for employers in high-demand regions facing potential labor shortages.
