On May 4, 2025, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt refuted a New Jersey Globe report claiming Senator Cory Booker received assurances from the White House Counsel’s Office that Alina Habba would not serve a full term as U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey.

Leavitt called the report “Fake News,” stating no such assurances were given. President Trump appointed Habba, his former lawyer, as interim U.S. Attorney in March 2025, praising her efforts to combat corruption in New Jersey.

The New Jersey Globe had reported on May 2 that Booker was told Habba’s role was temporary, citing discussions with the White House.

Leavitt’s statement underscores ongoing tensions between the Trump administration and New Jersey Democrats, as Habba’s aggressive anti-corruption stance continues to stir controversy in the state’s political landscape.
