Republicans Block Pro-2A Suppressor Bill, Sparking Outrage

On May 8, 2025, Republicans in the U.S. House blocked a bill introduced by Rep. Andrew Clyde (R-GA) to eliminate the $200 tax and federal registry requirement for firearm suppressors.
The legislation aimed to ease access to suppressors, which reduce gunshot noise by 20-35 decibels, protecting hearing for shooters and hunters.
Gun rights advocates argue this tax creates a financial barrier to exercising Second Amendment rights.
Colion Noir, a prominent Second Amendment advocate, criticized the decision, stating, “Suppressors don’t make guns silent, they make them safe… This tax infringes on American Second Amendment liberties by creating a massive financial barrier.”
The bill’s failure, despite a Republican-led House, has frustrated pro-gun supporters, who see suppressors as practical safety tools, not the “assassin’s weapon” often portrayed.
The vote exposed divisions among Republicans on modern firearm accessories.
