Former U.S. Ambassador to South Africa, Lana Marks, raised serious concerns about violence against white South African farmers, reacting to a recent Oval Office meeting between U.S. President Trump and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Marks strongly supported President Trump’s claims, stating that white Afrikaner farmers are being “slaughtered” and describing the situation as “incontrovertible.” She cited visuals presented by President Trump during the May 21, 2025, meeting as undeniable evidence of the crisis.

Marks criticized Ramaphosa, claiming he failed to address land reform issues during her tenure as ambassador from 2019 to 2021. She warned that conditions worsened significantly after her departure, raising fears of a potential “bloodbath” if not addressed.

Praising President Trump’s decision to grant refugee status to white South African farmers, Marks called it a “kind” gesture amid escalating dangers. She accused the South African government of enabling policies that could lead to further violence, urging the country to “get back on track.” When asked if white farmers are being slaughtered, Marks responded, “Yes.”

Marks highlighted a video from the meeting showing individuals chanting about occupying land without permission, suggesting this rhetoric fuels fear among Afrikaner farmers.

She noted that, 35 years after apartheid’s end, some South African officials promote policies threatening farmers with over 400 years of ties to the land.

Recounting her 2019 discussions with Ramaphosa, Marks said she urged him not to interfere with landowners, emphasizing President Trump’s scrutiny. While Ramaphosa took no action against farmers during her tenure, she stated the situation deteriorated after 2021, leading to increased violence and instability.

Marks portrayed President Trump’s approach, including actions like cutting aid, expelling South Africa’s ambassador, and imposing tariffs, as a call for South Africa to address the violence and restore stability. She emphasized his patience and kindness during the meeting.

The discussion reflects growing U.S.-South Africa tensions, with President Trump’s focus on the plight of white farmers shaping bilateral relations. Marks’ warnings have amplified concerns about Afrikaner farmers’ safety, sparking widespread attention on platforms like X.
