On May 29, 2025, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) released a list of over 500 jurisdictions, including Las Vegas, labeling them as “sanctuary jurisdictions” for allegedly obstructing federal immigration laws. The move, announced via a DHS X post at 22:48 UTC, aligns with President Trump’s agenda to prioritize American safety, accusing these areas of endangering citizens by “harboring criminal illegal aliens.”

The list, mandated by Executive Order 14287 signed on April 28, 2025, spans states like California, Colorado, and Illinois, as well as cities and counties nationwide. DHS Secretary Kristi Noem emphasized that these jurisdictions undermine law enforcement by protecting “dangerous criminal aliens,” demanding they revise policies to comply with federal law. Non-compliance could lead to federal funding cuts or legal action.

The DHS list, which will be updated regularly, marks a significant escalation in the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement strategy.

However, past legal challenges to similar policies suggest this crackdown may face resistance in court, as jurisdictions defend their autonomy and immigrant communities brace for impact.
