Deputy Admits Leaking Child Rapist’s Charge to Spark Inmate Justice

A former Franklin County sheriff’s deputy, Matthew Carey, 28, pleaded guilty Friday to a federal civil rights violation after deliberately exposing a pretrial detainee’s charge of raping a minor to another inmate, leading to an assault.
In March 2022, Carey disclosed the sensitive charge to detainee Gmier McCall, knowing it would likely incite violence against the alleged offender. The victim was subsequently attacked by inmates.
Carey admitted to depriving the detainee of his right to safety under the Fourteenth Amendment.
He faces up to 10 years in prison, with sentencing pending. McCall, who conspired in the violation, also pleaded guilty and faces a similar penalty.
The case, prosecuted by the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, underscores accountability for law enforcement misconduct.
