Minnesota House Member Admits Illegal Alien Status During Immigration Debate

In a startling revelation during a Minnesota House session on Monday, June 9, 2025, Representative Kaohyl Vang Her, a Democrat from Minneapolis, disclosed that she and her parents are undocumented immigrants.
The admission came as the House debated House File 1, a bill aimed at expanding MinnesotaCare eligibility to include undocumented adult immigrants.
Vang Hershared a personal anecdote about a paperwork error that led to her family’s undocumented status. “Because his mother had died, my father, as the one processing the paperwork, put my grandmother down as his mother. And so I am illegal in this country. My parents are illegal here in this country,” she stated during the session.
The revelation has ignited a firestorm of reactions, with some calling for her resignation and others defending her transparency. The video of her speech, which has since gone viral on social media, shows her discussing the broader implications of immigration policy and healthcare access for undocumented individuals.
House File 1, which Vang Her was advocating for, seeks to modify the state’s healthcare program to include undocumented adults, a move that has already seen significant enrollment. According to state records, 17,396 undocumented immigrants have enrolled in MinnesotaCare since the policy’s implementation, costing the state millions due to the lack of federal matching funds, which cover 100% of the expenses.
The admission has also drawn attention from national figures, including Tom Homan, President-elect Donald Trump’s appointed “border czar.” Homan, known for his hardline stance on immigration enforcement, has previously threatened to deport undocumented immigrants and has opposed sanctuary city policies. Social media users have tagged Homan, urging action against Vang Her.
Vang Her’s district office has not yet responded to requests for comment, but the incident has raised questions about the eligibility of undocumented immigrants to hold public office and the broader implications for immigration policy in Minnesota and beyond.
This reveal raises serious question on immigration, healthcare, and the role of undocumented individuals in American society, particularly as the Trump administration prepares to implement stricter enforcement measures.
