The U.S. Department of Justice announced federal charges against Grzegorz Vandenberg, a 48-year-old Texas man, for allegedly purchasing explosives in New Mexico with plans to target law enforcement and government officials during riots in Los Angeles, California.

Court documents reveal that on June 12, Vandenberg visited a travel center in Lordsburg, New Mexico, seeking powerful fireworks to harm people, claiming prior special forces experience and the ability to make pipe bombs.

He purchased six mortars with 60 grams of gunpowder each and 36 large fireworks, intending to use them violently at the riots.

Attorney General Pamela Bondi condemned the plot, emphasizing swift federal action against threats to law enforcement.

FBI Director Kash Patel credited a store cashier’s vigilance in noting Vandenberg’s license plate, aiding his capture. Vandenberg faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted.

He remains in custody pending trial.
