Uganda-Born Shia Muslim’s Progressive Victory Shakes Up New York’s Political Landscape
Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani, a 33-year-old Democratic socialist, claimed victory in the New York City Democratic mayoral primary, defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo.
With 92% of votes counted, Mamdani’s lead triggered ranked choice voting, securing his nomination. Cuomo called to congratulate Mamdani, acknowledging his campaign’s success in mobilizing young voters.
Mamdani, a practicing Twelver Shia Muslim, was born in Kampala, Uganda, on October 18, 1991, and moved to the United States at age seven, becoming a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2018.
His platform, focused on affordability, includes rent freezes, free buses, childcare, city-owned grocery stores, and 200,000 affordable housing units, funded by higher corporate and top-earner taxes.
Endorsed by Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Mamdani’s win signals a progressive shift.
Despite high voter turnout of nearly 1.1 million, no candidate hit 50% in the first round. Cuomo, who spent $20 million on ads, may run independently in November.
The race, compared to recent congressional upsets, highlights New York’s evolving political landscape.
