OCR Investigates Potential Title IX Violations in High School Softball Championship

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office for Civil Rights (OCR) has launched an investigation into the Minnesota Department of Education and the Minnesota State High School League for potential Title IX violations.

The probe examines whether Minnesota discriminated by allowing a male athlete to compete on a female-only high school softball team, leading to a state championship win.

Title IX prohibits sex discrimination in federally funded education programs. OCR Director Paula M. Stannard reiterates that Minnesota must ensure fair and safe opportunities for female athletes.

The investigation follows Minnesota’s decision to prioritize state law over President Trump’s Executive Order, which seeks to exclude males from women’s sports for fairness and safety.

This action aligns with OCR’s broader effort to uphold Title IX and protect female athletes.

Complaints can be filed at the HHS OCR website.
