Suspect Targeted U.S. Navy Personnel in Clandestine Recruitment Scheme

On Tuesday, July 1, 2025, the FBI Houston Field Office, in collaboration with the Houston Police Department, announced the arrest of Liren Lai, a Chinese national, for allegedly conducting clandestine intelligence operations on behalf of China’s Ministry of State Security (MSS).

The arrest, executed on June 27, 2025, stems from Lai’s efforts to identify and potentially recruit U.S. Navy personnel, raising significant national security concerns.

Authorities allege Lai used his tourist visa, obtained in April 2025, to carry out espionage activities targeting naval personnel.

The case highlights ongoing tensions between the U.S. and China, with the FBI emphasizing its commitment to countering foreign intelligence threats.

If convicted, Lai could face up to 10 years in prison.

This incident follows a recent trend of espionage cases involving Chinese nationals, prompting heightened vigilance from U.S. law enforcement agencies.
