Trump Celebrates Historic Election of First American Pope

On May 8, 2025, Donald Trump took to Truth Social to congratulate Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost on his election as Pope Leo XIV, marking the first time an American has ascended to the papacy.
“It is such an honor to realize that he is the first American Pope,” Trump wrote, expressing excitement for the “new era” and his anticipation to meet the pontiff.
Prevost, a 69-year-old Chicago-born cardinal, previously served as head of the Vatican Dicastery for Bishops and was known for his missionary work in Peru.
His election followed the death of Pope Francis, with the conclave favoring Prevost for his alignment with Francis’ progressive stances on migration and climate issues.
Despite Trump’s enthusiasm, Prevost had previously criticized U.S. immigration policies, highlighting potential tensions as the new papacy begins.
