UK and US Strike Trade Deal to Ease Tariffs

On May 8, 2025, the United States and United Kingdom announced a trade deal, the first since President Donald Trump imposed sweeping tariffs on April 2.
The agreement, described as a step toward a broader trade pact, reduces U.S. tariffs on UK goods like steel, aluminum, and cars, previously hit with 25% duties. In return, the UK will lower its digital services tax, impacting U.S. tech giants.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer hailed the deal as a boost for UK exports, while Trump called it a “comprehensive” win for both nations.
The UK maintained strict food standards, ruling out imports like chlorine-washed chicken.
Though narrow in scope, the deal strengthens UK-US ties and sets a precedent amid global trade tensions.
Further negotiations are expected to address remaining barriers.
