DOJ Investigates Chicago Mayor Johnson Over Alleged Race-Based Hiring

The U.S. Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division has launched an investigation into Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson’s hiring practices, citing potential violations of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
The probe was prompted by Johnson’s public statements at a church event, where he emphasized hiring Black individuals, stating, “When you hire our people, we always look out for everybody else.”
The DOJ’s letter, dated May 19, 2025, highlights concerns about a pattern of employment discrimination favoring Black individuals over others, including specific roles held by Black officials.
This investigation aims to determine if the City’s practices comply with federal law prohibiting race-based employment decisions.
Mayor Johnson’s office has not yet responded to the allegations, but the inquiry could lead to significant policy changes or legal repercussions.
