On May 22, 2025, the U.S. House passed H.R. 1, the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” with a 215-214 vote, delivering what supporters call the largest middle-class tax cut in history.

However, all 214 Democrats voted against the bill, drawing sharp criticism.

The legislation offers tax relief, including no taxes on tips and higher child credits, alongside $3.8 trillion in cuts for families and businesses.

It also funds border security with 3,000 new Border Patrol agents and 10,000 ICE officers while cutting $267 billion from SNAP and $700 billion from Medicaid.

Critics like Gunther Eagleman claim, “Democrats hate Americans,” arguing their opposition rejects benefits for citizens.

Supporters of the Democratic stance, however, cite the bill’s $2.3 trillion debt increase and disproportionate benefits for the wealthy, with 67% of tax cuts favoring the richest 20%, per the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy.
