Following a New York Times report on volunteers in Nashville countering Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) issued a strong statement on May 27, 2025.

DHS condemned actions that obstruct ICE, accusing individuals of “siding with vicious cartels, human traffickers, and violent criminals.”

The agency highlighted a 413% surge in assaults on ICE officers, attributing the violence to demonization of law enforcement. The statement emphasized that President Trump’s immigration enforcement policies, backed by voters, are being implemented to ensure public safety.

This comes after a joint operation with Tennessee Highway Patrol in Nashville, where volunteers from The ReMIX Tennessee documented ICE activities to protect immigrant communities.

Tensions remain high as advocacy groups and DHS clash over the treatment of immigrants in the city.
