North-West University (NWU) has launched an investigation following an incident at its Potchefstroom Campus, commonly known as the PUK Campus, where students allegedly chanted the song “Kill the Boer” during a late-night gathering at a student residence.

The incident occurred on the night of Thursday, June 5, 2025, and has sparked debate over racial tensions in South Africa.

The university issued a media statement on June 6, confirming that the incident involved “chanting and the infringement of other students’ rights.” The statement, issued by NWU’s Corporate Relations and Marketing department, did not explicitly name the song but sources confirm it was “Kill the Boer,” a chant often criticized for its potential to incite violence against white farmers, particularly those of Afrikaner descent. The phrase “Boer,” meaning farmer in Afrikaans, is often used to refer to white South Africans of Dutch descent.

NWU emphasized its commitment to human rights, stating, “The university views the infringement or violation of human rights, policies, and rules in a serious light, and strongly condemns any actions or behavior that seek to undermine its values.” The university assured stakeholders that a thorough investigation is underway and that “anyone found guilty will be dealt with firmly in accordance with applicable rules and regulations.”

The incident at NWU is not the first of its kind on the PUK Campus. In 2014, the university investigated the distribution of pamphlets bearing the words “KILL the boer, KILL the racist, KILL Afrikaans,” as reported by OFM.

The recurrence of such incidents underscores the ongoing racial tensions in South Africa, a country still grappling with the legacy of apartheid and the challenges of reconciliation.

As the investigation unfolds, the incident has reignited a national conversation about the boundaries of free speech and the persistence of racial divisions.

For now, the university has promised a firm response, but the broader implications of the event are likely to resonate far beyond the PUK Campus.
