The U.S. Department of Education has elevated two Minnesota Title IX investigations to the Title IX Special Investigations Team, a joint effort with the Department of Justice.

The probes target the Minnesota Department of Education and the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) over policies allowing male students to compete in girls’ sports and access female facilities based on gender identity.

The move follows a male athlete from Champlin Park High School dominating a girls’ MSHSL softball championship.

Initiated in February and June 2025, the investigations address alleged violations of federal antidiscrimination laws. Education Secretary Linda McMahon emphasized protecting women’s rights, criticizing Minnesota’s policies.

The escalation to the Title IX Special Investigations Team, formed in April to handle rising complaints, signals stronger federal scrutiny.

June marks “Title IX Month,” commemorating the law’s 1972 enactment.
