The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) unveiled a pilot program to accelerate testing of advanced nuclear reactors, aligning with President Trump’s Executive Order to reform nuclear testing. The initiative invites U.S. reactor companies to build and operate test reactors outside national laboratories under DOE authorization, aiming for at least three reactors to achieve criticality by July 4, 2026.

Energy Secretary Chris Wright emphasized the program’s role in reviving U.S. nuclear leadership, stating, “We are expediting next-generation nuclear technologies to drive economic prosperity and national security.” The program unlocks private funding and streamlines commercial licensing, fostering innovation without focusing on commercial suitability.

Applicants must cover all project costs and meet criteria like technological readiness and financial viability.

Initial applications are due July 21, 2025, with an Industry Day event scheduled for June 25. Details are available on FedConnect.
