This program funds communities that uphold our nation’s public lands and waters, while also investing in essential services like firefighting, policing, education, and road construction.
The U.S. Department of the Interior has announced $644.8 million in Payments in Lieu of Taxes (PILT) for 2025, aiding over 1,900 state and local governments.
These funds compensate for tax-exempt federal lands, supporting essential services like firefighting, policing, education, and road construction.
Managed by agencies like the Bureau of Land Management and National Park Service, PILT payments are calculated based on federal land acreage and local population.
Since 1977, over $12.6 billion has been distributed to states, D.C., Puerto Rico, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Secretary Doug Burgum noted the Trump administration’s commitment to empowering local communities through these funds, which bolster public safety and infrastructure.
The payments, derived from $20.7 billion in annual public land revenue, vary yearly due to changes in acreage, revenue-sharing, and inflation.
