ICE Notifies Authorities and Canadian Consulate as Investigation into Detainee’s Death Continues
A 49-year-old Canadian national, Johnny Noviello, passed away on June 23, 2025, while in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody at the Bureau of Prisons Federal Detention Center in Miami.
Noviello was found unresponsive at 12:54 p.m., and despite immediate medical intervention, including CPR and defibrillator use, he was pronounced deceased by Miami Fire Rescue at 1:36 p.m. The cause of death remains under investigation.
Noviello, a lawful permanent resident since 1991, was convicted in 2023 for drug trafficking and racketeering in Volusia County, Florida, and sentenced to 12 months in prison. ICE arrested him on May 15, 2025, for immigration violations related to his convictions.
ICE notified relevant authorities, including the Canadian Consulate, and will release a detailed report within 90 days, per policy.
The agency says they remain committed to providing comprehensive medical care to all detainees.
