U.S. Department of Education Empowers States to Enhance Educational Options and Improve Underperforming Schools

The U.S. Department of Education issued guidance to state education leaders on leveraging federal funds under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act to enhance school choice and improve underperforming schools.

The guidance targets schools identified for comprehensive, targeted, or additional targeted support due to low performance.

Acting Assistant Secretary Hayley Sanon emphasized the Trump administration’s commitment to improving student outcomes and providing better educational options.

States can use their 7% Title I, Part A allocation to fund local education agencies through competitive grants, prioritizing strategies that align with community needs.

Louisiana’s Superintendent Dr. Cade Brumley and Indiana’s Secretary Dr. Katie Jenner praised the guidance, citing their states’ success with school choice and data-driven reforms.

The initiative aligns with President Trump’s Executive Order to expand educational freedom, urging states to empower families with high-quality school options while addressing school improvement.
