Duffy Demands Answers from Mayor Bass and Transit Chief on Safety Plans for Global Events

U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy sharply criticized Los Angeles County leaders for their handling of recent anti-ICE riots, which disrupted federally funded transit systems and raised doubts about the city’s preparedness for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and 2028 Olympics.

In a scathing statement, Duffy accused California Governor Gavin Newsom and LA Mayor Karen Bass of failing to protect residents, crediting President Donald Trump’s intervention with the National Guard and Marines for restoring order.

“The weak leadership shown does not inspire confidence in your ability to represent one of the nation’s largest cities as it hosts some of the world’s biggest events,” Duffy said, highlighting service cancellations on LA’s rail and bus systems caused by the unrest.

He expressed concern over the city’s ability to ensure safety for the expected influx of hundreds of thousands of visitors during the upcoming global events.

In letters to Mayor Bass and LA County Metropolitan Transportation Authority CEO Stephanie Wiggins, Duffy demanded detailed reports within 30 days.

Bass must outline transit service statuses, law enforcement collaboration, safety protocols for future unrest, and plans to ensure safe transport for World Cup and Olympic attendees.

Wiggins was asked to address crime deterrence, fare evasion, and cleanliness on LA Metro systems.

The U.S. Department of Transportation emphasized its commitment to safe and secure travel in LA, reflecting the Trump Administration’s focus on infrastructure and public safety.

Earlier this year, Duffy sent similar letters to transit authorities in Washington, D.C., and New York, signaling a broader push for enhanced transit security nationwide.
