A Selfless Gesture Earns Officer Andrew Spottswood CMPD’s Prestigious Acts of Excellence Award
In a heartwarming display of compassion, Officer Andrew Spottswood of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD), in Charlotte, North Carolina, went above and beyond to help a 75-year-old man robbed of his wallet.
The stolen items including his ID, bus pass, and debit card left the elderly man, who has no family or transportation, in despair.
Undeterred, Officer Spottswood took him to the DMV for a replacement ID, even offering to pay the $13 fee (later waived by a kind clerk).
He then escorted the man to the bank for a new card and to the CATS station for a bus pass, finishing with a meal to ease his hunger.
The selfless act, kept quiet by Spottswood, was revealed when the grateful man contacted a supervisor.
This week, Spottswood received CMPD’s Acts of Excellence award, a testament to his kindness and the department’s growing culture of care.
