Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced a groundbreaking visa restriction policy aimed at curbing the influx of fentanyl into the United States
Targeting family members and close associates of individuals sanctioned under Executive Order 14059, the policy seeks to dismantle the networks fueling the opioid epidemic, which claimed over 70,000 American lives in 2024, according to the CDC.
Rubio’s initiative builds on prior sanctions against over 100 entities, including the Sinaloa Cartel and Chinese precursor suppliers, as reported by the U.S. Treasury.
The move comes amid heightened U.S.-Mexico cooperation, highlighted by a recent seizure of 110,000 fentanyl pills.
Rubio emphasized using “all necessary tools” to address the crisis, signaling a multi-faceted approach.
